Courthouse Project

The Petroleum County Courthouse Rehabilitation project will expand economic development and social opportunities in the area by creating office and housing space on the second floor of the historic courthouse.  The entire building will be rehabilitated, undergoing repairs and upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems, and the second floor will be rehabilitated into five offices and four apartments. These changes will be made utilizing the existing floor plan.

High Plains Architects are managing the project and TW Clark and Ridley will manage the construction, which will begin in the fall of 2024. Construction is scheduled for completion in the early summer of 2025 with apartments and offices ready to rent by August 1, 2025!

FUNDING:

The project meets the standards for a historic rehabilitation project and therefore will utilize historic tax credits for approximately $400,000 of the $2 million project cost. The creation of the Central Montana Regional Port Authority is the entity that makes the historic tax credits possible. The Port Authority is now in place and will catalyze additional redevelopment projects in the region.

Public and private grants make up the rest of the project funding, with significant funding from the Montana Historic Preservation Grant, the Community Development Block Grant, and the Coal Board Grant programs. The Winnett ACES has secured funding for the project from the Steele-Reese Foundation, the Foundation for Montana History, the Carrell Grant Donor Advised Fund, the Gianforte Family Foundation, the Central Montana Foundation, and the High Stakes Foundation.
